Kushner 1974'te New York'a taşınmıştır ve eğitimini Columbia Üniversitesi'nde sürdürmüştür. Yönetmenlik eğitimini New York Üniversitesinde almıştır ve 1984 te mezun olmuştur. Nisan 2003'te Mark Harris'le New York'ta evlenmiştir.
