değiştirIvan Simon Cary Elwes, 26 Ekim 1962 tarihinde Westminster, Londra'da dünyaya geldi. Onun reklamcı babası Dominic Elwes ve dedesi Simon Elwes çok iyi bilinen Britanyalı portre ressamlarıydılar.[1] Babası 1975'te intihar etmeden önce yüksek sosyeteye girmişti (Lord Lucan ve ayrıca birlikte olduğu Lady Annabel Goldsmith ile arkadaş olmuştu). Elwes'in annesi iç mimar ve ticaret filosunun mirasçısı olan Hırvat ve İrlanda asıllı Tessa Georgina Kennedy idi.[2] Cary'nin annesi 1958'de 19 yaşındayken Dominic Elwes ile evden kaçarak evlendi. Tessa Kennedy sonrasında bir Hollywood yapımcısı Elliott Kastner ile evlendi, bu evlilikten Cary'nin Milica Kastner adında üvey bir kız kardeşi bulunmaktadır.
