Brian Frederick Mathew (d. 1936, Limpsfield, Surrey, İngiltere), İngiliz botanikçidir. Özel uzmanlık alanı soğanlı bitkilerdir. Hem bilim insanlarına hem de bahçıvanlara hitap eden soğanlı bitkiler üzerine birçok kitabın yanı sıra Daphne (Chris Brickell ile birlikte), Lewisia ve Helleborus da dahil olmak üzere diğer cinsler üzerine de monografiler yazmıştır. Bitki bilim mahlası B.Mathew'dir.[1]

Brian Mathew, İngiltere'nin Surrey kentindeki bir köy olan Limpsfield'da doğdu. Ailesinin etkisiyle çocuk yaşlarda iken bitkilere ilgi duymaya başladı. Bu yaşlarda iken karşılaştığı Helleborus orientalis, ileride Helleborus cinsi üzerine yazdığı monografinin temellerini atmış olabilir.[2]

Eğitimini yerel okullarda sürdürdü. Okuldan sonra zorunlu askerlik hizmetini Kraliyet Hava Kuvvetleri'nde geçirdi ve Britanya'nın atom bombasını içeren gizli projesinde yer aldı. Askerlik hizmeti bittiğinde, bir aile dostunun önerisi ile, Wisley'deki Kraliyet Bahçıvanlık Derneği tarafından organize edilen bahçecilik okuluna gitti. Giriş, üç yıllık iş deneyimi gerektiriyordu.

1963 yılında Bowles bursunu kazanarak İran'a beş aylık bir botanik gezisi düzenledi. Birçok soğanlı bitki örneği toplandı, bu örnekler arasında özellikle Crocus, Fritillaria ve Iris türleri dikkat çekiciydi. Daha sonra Türkiye ve Balkanlar'a yapılan gezilerinde ilgi alanına Helleborus'u da dahil etti.

1973 yılında ilk eseri olan Dwarf Bulbs'u yayımladı. Bunu, 1978'de The Larger Bulbs takip etti. İlk eserinin revizyonunu 1987'de The Smaller Bulbs adıyla yeniden yayımlandı. 1973 ile 1992 yılları arasında, soğanlı bitkiler üzerine dokuz kitabın yazarı veya ortak yazarıydı.

1991'de Kraliyet Bahçıvanlık Derneği tarafından Victoria Onur Madalyası ile ödüllendirildi.[3] 1992'de International Bulb Society tarafından Herbert Madalyası ile ödüllendirildi.[4]

1993 ile 2005 yılları arasında yazarı veya ortak yazarı olduğu 13 kitap yayımladı. Bunlar yine soğanlı bitkiler ile ilgiliydi. Örneğin; Lilies: a romantic history with a guide to cultivation (1993) veya The Cyclamen of Turkey (2001, Neriman Özhatay ile).
