MacRae, 22 Şubat 1936'da Columbia, Kuzey Karolina'da doğdu.[3] Kaliforniya Sanat Enstitüsü ile Otis Sanat ve Tasarım Koleji'nde öğrenim gördü.[4] 1957'de başladığı oyunculuk kariyerini 2011 yılına kadar sürdürdü.

En çok; 1964-1969 yılları arasında Lou-Ann Poovie rolünde olduğu Gomer Pyle, U.S.M.C. adlı TV komedi dizisiyle akıllarda kaldı.[3][5][6] [7]

Yer aldığı diğer bazı önemli yapımlar arasında; Anatomy of a Murder, The Verdict Is Yours,[8] 77 Sunset Strip, Hawaiian Eye, Surfside 6, Harrigan and Son, Burke's Law, Dr. Kildare, General Hospital, Gunsmoke, Guiding Light, The Wild Westerners, Wild Is My Love, For Love or Money, Kaçak ve Bonanza sayılabilir.[9][10][11][12][13][14] Başarılı oyunculuk kariyeriyle 1974'te Altın Palmiye Ödülü'nü ve iki kezde İngiliz Film Akademisi Ödülü'nü kazanmış ve üç kezde Akademi Ödülü'ne aday gösterilmiştir.[15][16]

Özel yaşamı ve ölümü

Üç kez evlenen bir erkek çocuğu bulunan MacRae, 27 Mayıs 2024'te Fayetteville, Kuzey Karolina'da doğal nedenlerden 88 yaşında öldü.[17][18][19][20]
