[[Pearl Harbor saldırısı]] sırasında [[Hawaii]]'de ikamet eden Burroughs, yaşı altmışlı yılların sonlarında olmasına rağmen [[savaş muhabiri]] olmak için başvurdu. Buna izin verildi ve böylelikle [[İkinci Dünya Savaşı]] sırasında ABD'nin en yaşlı savaş muhabirlerinden biri oldu. Savaş bittikten sonra [[Encino]], [[Kaliforniya]]'ya taşındı. Çeşitli sağlık sorunları ile mücadele ettikten sonra, 19 Mart 1950'de [[kalp krizi]]nden yaşamını yitirdi.
