Irving Rameses Rhames, 12 Mayıs 1959 tarihinde New York City, New York'ta dünyaya geldi. Oyunculuk sevgisini keşfettiği New York Sahne Sanatları Lisesi'ne girdi. Liseden sonra oyunculuk öğrencisi Stanley Tucci'nin kendisine "Ving" lakabını verdiği SUNY Purchase'de tiyatro eğitimi aldı. Rhames daha sonra Juilliard School'un Drama Bölümü'ne (Grup 12: 1979-1983)[1] geçti ve burada 1983'te Güzel Sanatlar Lisans derecesi ile mezun oldu.[2]
