The Animals, 1962 yılında Newcastle'da kurulmuş İngiliz müzik topluluğu. Grup 1959 yılında kurulmuş olan Alan Price Combo grubuna dayanıyordu.

Müzikleri Amerika'da ses getirmiş olan Chuck Berry ve Bo Diddley gibi müzisyenlerin örneğini verdikleri Rhythm & Blues'a dayanıyordu. İlk şarkıları Bob Dylan'ın "Baby, Let Me Follow You Down" parçasından esinlenilerek bestelenmiş olan "Baby Let Me Take You Home" adlı parçaydı. İkinci 45'likleri olan "House of the Rising Sun" grubun adını duyurmasına yol açtı. Eski bir halk şarkısı olan parça New Orleans'ta bulunan bir genelevde çalışan ve babası maden işçisi olan bir kadının hikâyesini anlatmaktaydı. Parça 5 dakikayı aştığı için yapımcılar parçayı kaydetmekte tereddüt ettilerse de plak hem ABD'de hem de Avrupa'da büyük bir başarı kazandı. Bundan sonraki iki yıl içinde grup 7 liste parçasına daha imza attı. Grubun 1965 yılında kaydettiği "Don't let me be misunderstood", 1960'ların efsanevi gruplarından olan grubun günümüzde de en bilinen parçalarından biridir.

1965 yılında klavyeci Alan Price uçak korkusu nedeniyle turnelere katılamadığı için gruptan ayrıldı. Yerine Dave Rowberry geçti. 1966 yılında grup dağıldı. Bryan "Chas" Chandler Jimi Hendrix ve Ambrose Slade gibi birçok önemli müzisyenin menajerliğini yapmaya başladı. San Francisco'ya giden Eric Burdon orada grubu Eric Burdon & The Animals adıyla yeniden kurdu. Bu grubun yaptığı "San Franciscan Nights" ve "Monterey" parçaları listelere girdi. Ancak grup 1969 yılında tümüyle dağıldı. 1970 yılında Burdon Lee Oskar ile birlikte War grubunu kurdu.

1999 yılında gitarist Hilton Valentine grubu Animals II adıyla yeniden bir araya getirdi.

2003 yılında grubun " The House of the Rising Sun " versiyonu Rolling Stone dergisinin Tüm Zamanların En İyi 500 Şarkısı listesinde 123. sırada yer aldı. Grubun 1965 hit single " We Gotta Get out of This Place ", aynı listede 233. sırada yer aldı. Her iki şarkı da The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame'in 500 Songs that Shaped Rock and Roll'da yer alıyor .

Grubun ilk kadrosunda bulunan Chas Chandler,17 Temmuz 1996 tarihinde, Newcastle General Hospital'da hayatını kaybetmiştir.

Grubun ilk kadrosunda bulunan Dave Rowberry, 6 Haziran 2003 tarihinde, Hackney, Londra, Birleşik Krallık'ta hayatını kaybetmiştir.

Grubun ilk kadrosunda bulunan Hilton Valentine, 29 Ocak 2021 tarihinde Connecticut, ABD'de hayatını kaybetmiştir.
