Cotton Mather
Cotton Mather /ˈmæðər/ FRS (12 Şubat 1663 -, 1728 Şubat 13) bir oldu New England Püriten bakanı üretken yazar. İngilizce konuşan sömürge Amerika'daki en önemli entelektüel figürlerden biri olan Mather, bugün esas olarak Magnalia Christi Americana (1702), bitki melezleme çalışmaları, çiçek hastalığı ve diğer bulaşıcı hastalıkları önlemek için aşılamayı teşvik etmesi[1] ve 1692–3'teki Salem cadı mahkemelerinden oynadığı rol için tanınır. Ayrıca Amerika'da yeni Newton bilimini destekledi ve 1723'te seçildiği Royal Society of London ile bilimsel çalışmalar yürüttü.[2] Kendi zamanında tartışmalı bir figür olan Cotton, kısmen Salem cadı davalarını desteklemekteki rolü nedeniyle,[3] babası Increase'in başkanlığını yapmış olduğu Harvard College başkanlığına başarısız bir şekilde aday oldu.[4]
