Bristol ve New Milton Fern Hill Manor Badminton Okulu'nda, Guildhall School Konuşma ve Drama Orta Okulu'nda eğitim gördü. Profesyonel olarak ilk BBC radyosu'da görev aldı. 1946 yılında Oxford Repertuvar Tiyatrosu'nda ilk defa perdeye çıktı. Sinema'da ilerleyen yaşına rağmen talep alan oyuncu 2002 yapımı The Book of Eve filmindeki rolüyle sivrildi.[4] [5]
