[[13 Eylül]] [[1814]] tarihinde [[Fort McHenry]]'nin İngiliz ordusuna karşı savunulması sırasında, İngilizlerin [http://www.bcpl.net/~etowner/anacreon.html To Anacreon in Heaven] isimli şarkısının ölçeğine uyacak şekilde, 35 yaşındaki şair ve avukat [[Francis Scott Key]] tarafından yazıldı. [[1931]] yılında [[Amerika Birleşik Devletleri Kongresi]] çıkardığı bir kanun ile, şarkıyı Amerika Birleşik Devletleri ulusal marşı ilan etti.
