1976'da doğmuş olan Inuit Ataqatigiit'in isteklerinden biri Grönland'ı bağımsız bir devlet haline getirmektir. 2005-2009 yıllarda Sosyaldemokratın kurduğu koalisyonun küçük ortağı olmuş, 2009 yılındaki seçimlerde %43,7 oy ile birinci parti olmuş ve hükümeti bu partinin lideri olan Kuupik Kleist kurmuştur.
