Ministro de Justicia

Abogado titulado en la Universidad de Chile, tiene 69 años de edad, está casado con Odette Boys, con quien tiene dos hijos y una nieta. Es Doctor en Derecho Penal de la Universidad Complutense de Madrid, España; Profesor Visitante de la Universidad de Harvard, Estados Unidos de América, y fue Becario Fullbright de la American University, en Washington DC, EE.UU.

Hasta marzo del 2003 ejerció privadamente la abogacía y encabezó el Capítulo Chileno de "Transparencia Internacional", hasta que fue nombrado en marzo de 2003 Ministro de Justicia del Gobierno del Presidente Ricardo Lagos Escobar. Actualmente preside la Comisión Asesora del Presidente de la República sobre Fortalecimiento de la Probidad Pública


Es profesor de Derecho Penal en las universidades Católica y del Desarrollo. Fue integrante del Consejo de Defensa del Estado (CDE) por 35 años y su Presidente entre 1993 y 1996. Fue abogado de la Corporación de Asistencia Judicial de la Región Metropolitana. Fue abogado integrante de la Corte Apelaciones de Santiago y consejero del Colegio de Abogados. Es consejero de la Federación Interamericana de Abogados (FIA) y miembro del Directorio de la United States Alumni Society (USAS).
